The 76ers' rising star, Tylrese Maxey, could be in line for a lucrative max contract deal, especially with the recent buzz surrounding Paul George.
According to reports from Shams Charania of The Athletic and
Stadium, Philadelphia 76ers standout Tyrese Maxey is poised to secure a maximum
contract extension with the team this offseason.
Charania shared
during a recent appearance on FanDuel TV's Run It Back that Maxey is expected
to command a maximum contract offer this summer.
While it's customary
for teams to reward promising young talents early to demonstrate commitment and
prevent potential free agency complications, the Sixers have strategic reasons
for delaying Maxey's extension.
At present, Maxey
carries a modest $13 million cap hit for the 2024-25 season, providing
Philadelphia with ample financial flexibility to pursue marquee players such as
Paul George from the Los Angeles Clippers.
By maintaining
Maxey's cap hold for as long as possible, the Sixers can retain the necessary
salary cap space to pursue top-tier free agents.
The timing of Maxey's
contract extension with the Sixers will likely hinge on his ongoing
contributions to the team. With impressive regular-season averages of 25.9
points and 6.2 assists and a stellar performance in the playoffs, where he's
averaging 32.4 points per game against the New York Knicks, Maxey has
undeniably proven his value.
Entering the 2023-24
season, there were doubts about Maxey's potential ceiling, but he has since
flourished, particularly after assuming a larger role following James Harden's
departure.
Given his continued
growth and impact, it appears inevitable that the Sixers will extend a max
contract offer to Maxey when the time is right.
